UX/UI Designer

zyBooks is looking for an experienced, motivated, and skilled UX/UI Designer to take a lead role in managing the end user’s experience of the zyBooks platform and zyLab solutions. You’ll work closely with engineering, product management, customer support, and end users to craft delightful and usable experiences for both students and instructors using our interactive online textbooks in a variety of STEM based disciplines.


Empathize with students and instructors to create delightful experiences to aid in teaching and learning.

Understand end user goals challenges as they relate to the project and use those to determine scope of workflows to design.

Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with product managers, customer support, and engineers.

Develop storyboards, wireframes, and static and interactive UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how a feature or application will function.

Work closely with product managers and engineers, to ideate, research, prototype, and iterate in a fast-paced environment.

Help to validate that finished products meet acceptance criteria and goals set forth in the designs.

Identify and troubleshoot UX problems reported from customer support.

Work to maintain and update our style guide of UI components.

Provide detailed visual designs when required.

Multi-task and support designs and iterations on multiple concurrent projects.

Maintain a consistent user experience when adding new features or updating existing ones.

Skills & Requirements

Portfolio of past work.

Up to date on common UX and UI best practices.

Sketch, Invision, Photoshop, etc. - It doesn’t matter what tools you prefer, just be proficient and have a solid proven workflow with the design tools of your choice.

HTML, CSS, Javascript.

Basic knowledge of Python, Java, C/C++ or other high level languages. You won’t be asked to code in these, but it will be helpful to understand basic examples in the platform features you help design.

Strong visual design principles.

Be a team player. Ability to communicate and work with other groups and maintain a clear vision of the end goal.

Nice to haves

Accessibility experience. Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 AA guidelines and how to meet them.

Experience with front end javascript frameworks. We use Ember, but knowledge of React or others will certainly be helpful. If you don’t have this experience, desire to learn will go a long way.

Other computer science, math, IT, or relevant skills. We create content in a large variety of STEM subjects and the broader your knowledge of these, the easier time you’ll have empathizing with students and instructors to design effective solutions.

Experience with GitHub, Jira, and Confluence

Previous experience in the EdTech world, specifically knowledge of common learning management systems and LTI integration.
