P
Polar

Product designer

Hey future Polarian!

We at Polar are building the most awesome tool for students and scientists to study and conduct research. As society we've completely shifted to digital when it comes to studying or researching but many of the tools are extremely generic. Especially working with information in a constant state of flow is utopia at best. This has many aspects - reading, note-taking, searching memorizing, automating and simplifying workflows, or collaborating with others. We want to remove two major issues when it comes to education. One, a lack of tools for students and researchers, and second, through that democratized education worldwide.

We started in 2019 as an open-source side project. With more and more traction, we recognized soon that there is much much more potential than we thought. Without a fully developed product and no major growth plans implemented yet we already have several thousand monthly active users and early revenue. We are funded for the next two years and plan to raise an external institutional round in the foreseeable future.

About us

We are a team of two founders with over 35 years of combined experience in startups, tech, growth, and business.

  • Jonathan is founder and focused on product and growth. He received his chemistry PhD from Yale and worked at BCG (management consulting) for five years before founding Polar
  • Kevin is founder and focused on development and product. He recently sold his last startup. Polar is his fourth startup. He is also one of the inventors of RSS

In addition, we have hired seven extremely driven and talented engineers and growth hackers on our team. As part of the interview process, you will have a chance to meet some of the team members to get a better idea of the team yourself.

We are looking for a Product Designer to join our team as soon as possible.🚀

Our Culture

  • We are remote-first!
  • Mutual trust
  • Openness
  • Strong ownership by each individual

We are still a small team and you are one of our very first hires. This means you joining us is a crucial decision. Based on our previous startup experience, we have a very clear idea of what kind of startup and culture we want to build. We want to make sure that this vision is in line with your ideal workplace. In addition, we are looking to hire for the long-term. We are only interested in candidates who share our passion for education, our vision of democratizing education, and in people who share our idea how to get there. We strongly respect your work-life balance but we are looking for someone who is passionate about the product and role, not just another 9-5 job. We want someone whose incentives are aligned with ours and who is as passionate about building an early-stage startup as we are

Position Overview

Our ideal candidate has a strong background in product design, UX/UI design, research, and preferably some startup experience. Specifically:

  • Demonstrated portfolio showing creativity and design skills
  • 3-5 years experience with design, including Figma, web design, interactive design, UI/UX
  • Experience with user interviews and user research
  • Experience with using design and brand guidelines, and preferably able to refine those yourself
  • Experience working with frontend engineers on implementing designs
  • Previous startup experience preferred but not required
  • Remote only with preference for Eastern Europe, North and South America. Working hours must overlap 3-4 hours at least with US West Coast time
  • No design firms

Pay is competitive for your region and depends on your experience and interview process. In addition, the role can include an equity component if you’re interested and you ace the interviews.

Your challenge

Since we are a very small startup, your role will be more than just being one designer in a big team. You will have major responsibilities from day 1. We provide hands-on mentorship and expect you to bring in best practices from your previous experiences. We have a senior design advisor who has worked with multiple Silicon Valley-based startups, incl. Jonathan’s previous startup. This includes making autonomous decisions, being clear and decisive about communication, and being a team player.

Screening criteria

We screen candidates across various facets. Technically, we want to see a strong set of hard skills and competent decision making. Culturally, we look for candidates who are confident yet humble, decisive yet open to others' opinions, and someone who wants to build a large vision as part of a long-term team.

Details about working cadence:

  • We are a fully remote team and you set your own schedule in general. However, we ask for 3-4 hours minimum overlap in the beginning
  • We are very open to flexible work arrangements - e.g., hours, location - once you have gained our trust. Flexibility at Polar is earned
  • We have a vacation policy in place which includes paid days off, all public holidays off, and more. Details will be shared once you pass all screening criteria
  • Salary is determined differently for each candidate based on various criteria, incl. seniority, location, and performance. However, the main criteria by far is your performance. Your salary is reviewed on a regular basis
  • Similarly, your role and responsibilities are reviewed on a regular basis. As we expect to grow significantly in the future, you can expect opportunities to grow with us as well
  • When you join us, we put together a development plan for every new joiner to ensure you continue developing professionally

We have a friendly company culture and are implementing various methods from our previous experiences in startups and consulting for that. We also have a Podcast called “Minimally Viable” where we discuss anything related to early-stage startups.

If you’re interested, please reach out to us at jonathan@getpolarized.io with your resume, LinkedIn, and portfolio (must include mobile/desktop app designs). Please also add a few summary sentences about you and your interest in Polar.

We are looking to fill this role as soon as possible, and are hiring on a rolling basis. We’re looking forward to your application!

We value diversity of perspective and seek to build an inclusive workplace that welcomes people from all different backgrounds.
